Review LaCie Ethernet Disk mini 500 GB (edmini)

Summary This is a very small, special-purpose Linux box. The unit seems physically very sturdy, is relatively small, and is quiet and cool. It is a factory-installed version of Twonky, and the media server to use than wired Ethernet it worked – as it was HD video encoded to 25Mbps CBR (Constant Bit Rate ie from Sony HDV Cam) My Ziova CS505 Media Player without apparent problems (3 1 / 2 stars for this). Edmini performance when writing files to the Ethernet cable was IMO not great – the best I write speed test using a crossover cable to a 3Com Gigabit Ethernet PC board, was about 640MB per minute (unlike Maxtor SS II, originally 800 MB per minute to write passages from the Netgear switch and that, because I have optimized more than 990 megabytes per minute, and the other tests I have changed as much as 2600MB per minute over my home network). And I found edmini is USB2 interface with the computer is not at all useful – it crashed the computer several times, and when they do not have their best performances for me to write is 376MB per minute – So, it’s unstable USB interface is much slower than its own Ethernet interface (zero stars here), and about one quarter of the comparison of the performance of the Adaptec USB drive that I connected to the same USB2 port for testing. So my average rating 1 75 stars, rounded to 2 stars.

    Other questions

When the power is connected, but the drive is removed from the transformer of the only consumes slightly less than 0 2A (110V AC), which is about 15 watts. When the device is switched on will use about 0 9A, approximately 70 watts. Not a configuration setting does not sleep, I could not see any signs that a low-power mode. So, if the left, this device would cost me about $ 85 per year in electricity. For reference, I have Maxtor Shared Storage II, used by about 0 6A, when running, and can be set to spin down drives when idle, cutting the 0 3A, so the Maxtor costs about $ 50 a year less for me.

When using DHCP the LaCie device and then restarted, it can not find a DHCP server (my network has that problem), and it provides itself such that the full disappeared from the network – and it can not even see the LaCie Configuration Utility. Getting out, who came to do. . . “Hold the button for 15 seconds and then … then …” reset, that no documents or FAQs.

Most of the rather limited control, this device is via an embedded web server. Usually seemed painfully slow – so wonder if it does not work. For those who need to know: The possibility of a “guest” account without a password it (required for some media players).

Many times the device only locked in their entirety – I could do nothing but to remove it (soft power button). I think it’s possible it was connected to the USB cable connected, I can not remember a lock-ups that occurred when it was not.

While connected to the same port Gigabit switch, I choose the LaCie 100 or 1000 Mb connection speed at any moment it started – and it is not a configuration setting.

button is also a big blue light that twice five seconds – the placement of a part of the HT rack unbearable flashes (If the device is visible) .

    About That USB2 interface

You can use the USB2 connection to your computer, you can install the driver plug the device into USB2 port on your PC. The device can not be installed because the mass storage device (the normal category of device USB2 drive), but the LaCie driver emulates a network adapter and the disk can be found in the network recognized. But this emulation uses the same server name and workgroup or an Ethernet interface, the LaCie unit itself is already broadcasting – so if you can not see edmini is Ethernet, you can not use the USB2 interface at all: edmini seems to highlight the Device Manager and remove the device icon, but the network node tree is already in use with an Ethernet connection to the same device. You may think this sounds so strange that I’ve had it wrong, but no, it really is.

To finish, LaCie supplied driver XP SP1 is not really, saw, and Combined status (as long as I keep my PC or the LaCie Ethernet) lost, but every attempt I made to drive failed and the driver was forced to loop the levels of CPU usage is 100% increase every few seconds, requiring a reboot and the PC.

is a USB2 port, a peripheral device like a printer or external hard drive. I do not experience this.

    OS Version Support

edmini Before I bought, I noticed that the LaCie website specifically mentioned in the WinXP SP1 product as “aid”. I needed that support, because I wanted to use it on your computer that SP1 can not be updated due to other dependencies. But when I announced that I test the USB driver is not isolated to XP SP1, LaCie support told (I quote from a copy and paste): “devices are designed around connecting to XP SP2 or 2000 SP4. Nothing will not refund, if the problem only present themselves as SP1. “

    conclusion

This product has a number of problems . With so-so write throughput over Ethernet, surprisingly, much slower USB2 interface, and LaCie refuses honor their word supports the version of the OS, I found this device unusable for my purposes – I have returned. But the problems do not apply to you. The media server worked well, and the unit is a cool, quiet, and run more or less, so I think a reasonable person could take a different decision under different circumstances. Just do not plan to “USB2 interface” to use your computer.

    Footnotes

This is a major, 10 MB is “ten Megabits, but 10 MB is” ten megabytes “.

When I wrote most of this review, and in fact many hours after I told the LaCie which I specified, packaged edmini unit, and send it back to The dealer told me that they just tested an XP SP1 and it worked for them. I can not prove that they are not doing that test, the result, but I can not find the timing very suspicious.

If you’re a techno-enthusiast, the other man again to read. If instead, you are looking to share files on a simple multiple home computers, buying that status.

The installation is very easy for me. I followed the Quick Installation Guide (which basically says: “Before you drive, put the software and follow the instructions”), and after a few minutes I was up and running. I have my laptop connected directly to first clear the mess, then connected to my Wireless-G router. Each time, the Mini-disc appeared as a network drive.

Now I have a set of “My Documents” for more than 2 PC and laptop. All my music and videos are the Mini Disc, and them directly to my computer without it copied to a local hard disk. I saw a few seconds longer to start the video, but they play like a local disk.

I’ve tried to backup and recovery software for fun and it seems to work, as described, but I did not use my Mini Disk for back-ups, so I There is not much experience.

Perhaps the disk is not fast enough to edit these files from the network (for some other basis), but less than $ 200 you a good amount of storage, multimedia and personal files .

  3. A. Blacker says:

When you take Ether Disk Mini out of the box, the first thing you’ll notice that quite a few Heft to this device. This is largely due to the metal casing, which acts as a heat sink is a hard disk. In addition to the EDMini is a small fan. There should be no concerns about overheating, even though it is left running 24×7.

Back of the unit is 10 / 100 / 1000 (wired) Ethernet port. 100 Meg, or better yet, a Gigabit (1000), you should be able to stream DVD-quality video without any problems. There are 2 USB ports on the back of the unit. One of the Mini can be connected directly to your computer. Others may be added space for the unit – half the addition of external USB drive.

Wizard CD makes it easy to “find” EDMini network and perform the initial configuration. While you might not even have to do something up from the device. It comes with Windows pre-entry. You could just shoot and then the Mini computer (s), the effort EDMini Share card. If you’re willing to do some more advanced settings, the administration is all done from the browser interface. It is quite easy to use. In the worst case, the web interface is well documented in the manual – which is a PDF installation disc. Nobody gives a printed manual more.

Mac users are not abandoned. You can share Mac as easily as Windows. A good way to share files for different operating systems. Since EDMini, are embedded in the Linux computer, you can use FTP, HTTP, or SMB from a Linux computer. If you are a Digital Media Player network, you can use a Media Server functionality Mini gives meaning to the DMP.

    Principle:
If you are a home user, or even a small office, and the need to allocate space for multiple computers, Ethernet Disk Mini is a good choice. However, if you’ve been waiting for “file server” performance, $ 200 device, you should probably use the extra money on the server.

  4. D. Coombe says:

Excellent product and great value. We were always creating our own shares, a notebook and desktop, where children can their lesson and we can document, photos, music sharing, etc. This device is a complete solution. Can easily centralize all information is easy to share and back up files to give space.

identification and management is simple and updating the latest firmware was simple. Support for FTP and HTTP protocols, it is fun. Operational times and transfer speeds seem to be more than enough. For some benchmarks of CNET, streamlined pretty well against much more expensive competition. I really can not support a review on this product, because I do not read more than drag the latest firmware. Site shows a well-organized and good information and support.

All-in-all a very little of the product, most suitable for home users well. For additional storage, redundancy and performance, check out some of their other products.

  5. Traveling Man says:

Set up was not as easy as I had hoped, however, LaCie, it was surprising the customer support available via telephone. I do not know what is good and customer support, and I did no more than 2 minutes waiting for someone to go to the phone.

car works well and easily stream HD content on a media adapter. Do not know why the other reviewer is to appeal against the transfer of speads. This is version 2, Gigabit Ethernet. Typical read / write speads through the network, which does not come as fast as a USB or Firewire. Overall an excellent run of money.
