I have these babies. I am an IT professional and have a PC-DVD devices and capturing video, but I still think I wanted this unit.
features appealed to me were:
– 16x write
– Sony brand
– DV
— Dual Layer burning support
– Stand-alone mode (no computer required)
;
I have this connected to my home theater. I have HD and the installation of the Motorola 6412 Hi-Def DVR. So far I have been able to show copies of the excellent Kid’s Nick and Cartoon Network, etc. to create, and SLP (6 hours record time). These are very suitable for long distances with a portable DVD player.
Have I done an excellent DVD movies shot in my own city with Sony HC30 digital camcorder. There, DV FireWire (IEEE-1394) is a convenient access. You must buy a FireWire cable if you have not. I had a 4 to 4 cable with a mini D-shaped connectors on both ends, and I got that cheap from my favorite online auction site.
Now, if you copy old VHS tapes that you back up DVR’ed or material, you may luck out, because the device is not working do to the Macrovision copy protection when it detects respect. I have been told, “Digital Video stabilizer,” as “Sima CT-2″ (do a Google search), who cleans the video signal and makes backup of legally owned and obtained the materials, so all is not lost in that area would like to back up your old VHS tapes or back up your DVR Sopranos.
There are three different inputs: RCA composite video / audio (yellow, red, white plugs), S-video and DV (FireWire). I have not tried S-Video, one FireWire and composite. If you plan to keep this to the DVR, such as the Mot 6412 connect to the audio device can be a challenge, Mot since 6412 shows only the optical audio output, and this device does not have an optical audio input. If you have a receiver, you may be able to see the responsible use of one of the outputs (VCR, or tape) is the unit of Sony and video directly on the 6412 and Sony. What I did, and then some other less than expected, but an acceptable volume of the digital channels, all was in order.
Finally, use good quality media. Do not go cheap. Use Memorex, or better yet Sony DVDs. I use DVD-R format because it’s what my stand-alone player supports. When you plan for the unit fires and finishing more than one DVD for each material in a few minutes until all the cables and the quality settings to get good, and the way you want, especially when connecting the DVR.
I found the preview LCD screen is very useful, but you must close the device you are not deep on a shelf or rack to the viewing angle should be almost on the top LCD screen to view. . . The following model is a pop-up Tilt display, are IMHO.
Initialization and finalization of the DVD is not that long. The device is a bit hard, but not excessive, and raises the heat of a fire. I suggest you leave him in a well ventilated. I have mine on my home theater rack and not inside. It is a little space, and finally, an attractive, combined with the fact that often use this to copy my camcorder to the investment makes sense for me.
I hope that this review was useful.

At first, I admit, $ 250 and the recorder is fairly sharp engagement, and I would not suggest anyone pay more than this. Have now admitted that it is a bit pricey, I will say I am happy with this burner and the feeling of remorse for the bombing, and the dollar. In the case of electronics, I really think that saying “you get what you pay for.” But it would be reasonable, I have to check into two parts. The concept of a burner, a computer and a stand-alone recorder function is still a great novel, and which is not complete. This is the Swiss army knife-cutters, while the wife of a high quality and the quality, nothing planned as a multi-function, it can not do everything perfectly all the bells and whistles. It is really important to the technical details of this product to study, make sure that what you buy, not buy blind and risk disappointing because they do not know what is expected. I wanted to use it as a regular DVD drive in my computer, and archive old VHS tapes and record TV programs. I knew it was not perfect, but I wanted something, all in one.
Drive mode: [5 of 5 Stars] connected to a computer, it is wonderful. It detects all recordable media that now (DVD-R/RW/DL, DVD + R / RW / DL), and it burns 16x discs properly and without error, lightning-fast. I used to back up your old films and so I had to give it a good workout, and it makes a beautiful and quiet. It is a great external DVD drive also, read quickly and silently. It comes and Nero 6 software is jam-packed and cool features. You can almost convert most any video files / photos and DVD-Video Nero. Please note that your relatively flat top-of-line DVD-ROM drive when connected to a computer. I use Verbatim and Taiyo Yuden DVD-Rs for everything and I’m not a coaster yet, but I think the quality of media is as important as the recorder.
STAND ALONE: [4 / 5 stars] I wanted to archive this old, decaying VHS tapes. Not perfect, let’s away from you. It is simply because the recording process is just the thing into the VCR and hit DVDirect. You can also record directly to your TV: If you are a cable to the VCR, which is nice if your favorite programs and save it without any trouble copying a VHS tape having hook later. Nice, you also need to save, while the disc is finalizing a number of sessions (you can have a DVD player to the finish). LCD screen is a nice feature, but it is not healthy. There are a few drawbacks, but none of them crippling, and this concept is relatively new, so I’m ready for the class of Sony on a curve. First, depending on the quality of the original VHS recording, you will not be finished as nice as expected, even look. I can burn just as “HQ” to a copy of good quality to get to me only about a 4-hour standard in record time 7GB disk. But again, I have to copy old VHS tapes, so what can I expect? Secondly, the DVD menu created his own self-image of the DVD format and you can not make changes in them, which is unfortunate because they are functional, but not beautifully designed. I have also several DVD players and burners drive directly to independent company acted improperly in the DVD player from my parents and have no problems with the PC DVD-Video disc (but not loaded with the DVDirect, of course, and I am still trying to find out why). My solution to all the above has been to the VHS tapes to disc, then import into DVDirect DVD video and editing program, Nero, when my own menus, titles and chapters, then bake again. I found this “modified” the finished work more reliably and DVD players (below freezing sneezing and photos) and has better compatibility with all my sets. And this way I really looking niftly DVD-Video also with all the bells and whistles. Granted, it means a lot of time to waste a DVD, but I buy a bunch at about 27 cents a disc, and it does not feel so bad offerings. Third, the inclusion in standalone mode a little boring. . . I do not feel quite comfortable giving it to themselves for one hours. It automatically detects the signal and if it does not “recognize” it will stop recording. This can be very irregular, the recording, but it is not really a problem, but only a mild nuissance and sometimes even useful.
Despite the quirks, this is a good buy. If it is cheaper, it would be phenominal buy. It’s cool, reliable and easy to use.

I bought it for about one months ago, and now I can honestly say that this is the best DVD burner out there! VHS to burn so easily that I could my old home videos burn very easily. . . 2-inch screen is very handy, because you know when to stop. . . It is very easy to install DVD JM. the quality of space, so if I had a very old VHS and the quality is not? not good, so I was able to burn approximately 6 hours on a single DVD of the same quality as the old. . .
Another plus nobody seems to mention, I can not burn directly to my TV! I’m a long drive, so my kids burnt to 6 hours in the Disney Channel program, so they can watch cartoons they had not? ‘ve seen!
Why did? I give 5 stars? Well, because the only thing missing is a way of menus, titles,, films etc. are burned without a computer, maybe, if I could do before finalizing anything to my computer, so I would have 10 stars!

I wanted copies of my daughter played basketball to his teammates, but using the DVD burner in my PC with the software, I have a terrible DVD. I bought this unit and I am amazed at how beautiful the picture quality is. I connected directly to the video camera, no PC. I’m able to make beautiful menus and titles sacrifice, but it suits me.
When the connection to your PC and the Nero software is stored on very quickly. But all the figures of the business of the game were poor at best (no different than a DVD drive on my PC’s).
So, for me, it can refer directly to the movies this is perfect. The user interface is easy to use. 2 “screen is really nice (I wish you could sit a better viewing angle) tilt. />
March 9, 2010, 9:36 pmI’ve used Sony brand discs and so far have not done coasters, no hang-ups, everything is perfect.
Jim Davis says:
When you burn directly to a VHS tape, DVD, exhibited stuttering effect, very noticiable during a presentation. It also has a tendency to start to pixelate image from a frame about once per second when recording a few minutes. This was very annoying and totally unacceptable. It is not always the same place, and when it started, it remained until the end.
March 9, 2010, 10:19 pmI have the firmware updated, and a problem to report to Sony technical support and never received an answer. Probably burned 15 DVD’s trying different brands and types of institutions and the DVDirect, and my S-VHS VCR until I finally have a successful soul tion. Instead of wiring directly to a VCR, I hook a VCR to a DV camcorder pass-thru mode, and FireWire video camera connected to a DVDirect. It has worked well for me in this configuration.
I also used the unit with an external drive on your computer and it worked very well in this capacity also.
