Floppy disk years dominated the data backup market for the home user they offered affordable data storage. Ok using floppies was akward, slow and very reliable, but when all we had. Then came the Zip drive and the world of data backup changed overnight thanks to the creator of the Zip drive – Iomega. You were no longer only a paltry 4MB Drive 1 – now you could fit on a 100MB Zip. Later this increased to, then a massive 750MB of storage, which was entirely unknown time.
Zip drives worked in almost exactly the same way as a floppy disk, except that they are physically larger and offered a much higher data transfer rate than home users had ever seen before, and “external” data storage device. The biggest problem with Zip drives is that, although they were similar to floppy disks you still separate from the ZIP drive, read or write to these discs, which in turn meant higher costs for home users.
