Western Digital My Passport Essential 250 GB USB 2.0 Portable External Hard Drive

Mark says:
Western Digital My Passport 320GB USB-2. 0 Portable Hard Drive (Midnight Black) is the largest capacity portable vital line-up. This comes in different colors like pink, Real Red, Artic White and Blue. They say they update on a regular Western Digital Passport 320 GB hard drive and I own both. Personally, I also own many other portable hard drives from Western Digital Passport and configuration that I could not have been happier. All these are very mobile back-up data, but for large backups slower than the A / C powered MyBook big-brothers copy.
Some people consider the Western Digital My Passport Essential 250GB and the Western Digital My Passport Essential 160 GB sizes of these stations. I started with 160 GB and owned several versions and all sizes, and capacity aside these drives are basically the same. If you have a fence between the smaller or larger size, the decision comes down to what really is needed most. If you want to do full backups, not box yourself in purchasing the 160 model when the hard drive is 120 GB GB. Give yourself some 320 and go as you can.
For backup needs of 80 GB or less, to consider the other skills. Periodic specials are performed on some of the smaller sizes, making them very attractive. Plus 500 GB model should be soon. So if you the largest size, then by all means get 320 GB version. But if you can make smaller, so the value pricing may entice you. Weigh the options, but whatever size you pick now make sure that it is sufficient to meet the needs of today and for at least the next 6 months. In fact, some people are very picky when I will want at least 2 drives so they can buy 2 copies of their backups, just in case.

Cons – a little late file transfer speeds backups
– Included software not useful for power users
– Shiny body attracts the beginning, fingerprints and dust
– USB only, so we expect the 250 GB LaCie Rugged Hard Disk if you fire-wire ports
– Only up to 320 GB right now, so we expect the 500 GB LaCie Rugged Hard Disk with FireWire and USB if you have more capacity portable drive
– need money to get the matter to be included
Looks
< br /> drive is a nice shiny appearance. Case can scratch the surface also attracts fingerprints and dust. But it remains a sensitive and you can buy a case or the status of the holder if it bothers you. Most versions are not included case, but you can pick up a small Case Logic External Hard Drive Case (Black) and $ 10 and $ 15.
Properties
I had trouble connecting this drive to any computer, including Windows XP, Vista and Mac OS X. Keep in mind that this is a USB-2. 0 device as old computers are not the same result.
Transmission speeds are ok but definitely slower / C powered MyBook. This man is still limited to 480 Mbit / s connection speed USB 2. 0, but is slightly slower than the performance of these large backups. USB-2. 0 velocity class can certainly not be achieved in production and you get a break. But it is a compromise that is worthwhile, because it is a USB-powered. Check out the LaCie 250 GB Rugged hard disk if you need fire-wire ports. Or try the LaCie 500 GB Rugged hard disk if you need more portable capacity.
Utility is included with this device is especially useful for beginners. I tested the backup software in particular but found it too slow and impractical. I mean really slow. It works, but cutting and pasting is better. Take my advice: do not use these programs, and not just cut and paste backups and saves to this drive. Reliability
I’m lucky passport line drive. They seem less absenteeism rates than many MyBook drives, but I also own this and I have no problems. Perhaps the gentle care has helped me a happy these guys now. Maybe it’s because these drives are generally off when in transit. Regardless, these guys held up fine. Conclusion
This position is a great laptop, or want a back-up call on the motion. It is nice to have a drive with 320GB capacity. It is smaller stations, but other than capacity there is no difference between them. See the changes in the price, and then drive size that suits you.
Enjoy!

Western Digital Passport reduced my 388 CD rack is a pocket-sized wonder. All photos, lesson plans and PowerPoint presentations, which was to play on my computer is now my passport.
This is a bit down. I was a little worried that I might more difficult to put that guy. My fear was reduced by about 15 seconds. About one months ago, I was brought back to Vista, XP, and had no problems with the installation of this product. . . nothing (like some people using Vista with some problems). It would not have been easier. (Thank you Western Digital!)
Now pre-installed software is bad REALLLLLY (a part of it is true). Western Digital is a reflection of this approach, because almost everything in its power to remove (and it discourages some people even buy their products). Minus one star seriously annoying!
Like other reviewers, the product is whisper quiet. And although some people found that they need an USB Power Adapter Y-cable, I do not. I have two years old Alien Area 51 m5550 and experienced no problems with power (this product). I would recommend that you buy without a passport substitute cable and give it a try for the extra money to invest.
And yes, the product is glossy, so it is visible fingerprints and can scratch easily. Amazon currently recommends small Case Logic External Hard Drive Case (Black), but it is far too large and the Passport remains too loosely alone. Instead I have LHDC-1 Case Logic Neoprene Portable Hard Drive Case bought (dark gray). (It is soft and protects the appearance of the product while in transit). If someone finds a better fit, feel free to comment on this post.
Bottom Line: Whatever you want pre-installed software, the product has exceeded my expectations. It is quiet, petite, and pretty amazing! It is an enormous amount of work fairly quickly (I was ready for any delay, of course) and makes my life a lot tidier. Highly recommended!

This product is really excellent for its intended purpose, other than the data transfer rate. I realized that this revision is contained in * * the most useful critical evaluation. Although I am the manufacturer to the data transfer rate reached to respond to some of the competitors’ desire to improve, I mean the prevention of potential buyers.
an improvement compared with the older version of Passport is that this station will stop period of inactivity. Previously (mine is 120 GB and silver case) does not spin down, even if the host computer is a sleep. Another improvement is the power required. This product worked fine, and the MacBook to a USB port, even if the MacBook battery is used, no AC.
Mac users, like an external hard drive, I recommend to run Mac OS Extended format of a file recording option. To do this, Disk Utility, MacOS X, can be found in / Applications / Utilities.
old 120GB model (silver) and this 320GB model (Passport series), I noticed that this model is slightly smaller and thinner. Sure it is easier to slide portfolio, but I have to see how well it is the shock normal daily transportation.
Now, the data transfer issue.
This drive ships formatted in FAT32. In this form, I get a point of reference, 16 8 MB / s transfer rate when I write a 2 0GB file to this drive. I have this drive formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled), which is much more modern filesystem, and run the same benchmark. The result is 18 0MB / s. Both tests were performed when the disk is empty (hard drive slows down when the stock is close to full capacity). My computer is an 8-core Mac Pro, and the speed of the host computer is not a limiting factor. This is very disappointing, showing that they are used for cheap chipset to connect to the USB drive 2. 0 port.
comparison, my Western Digital SATA-2. 5 “320 GB laptop hard drive (which is the product) to achieve 35-50MB / s in the same benchmark when installed directly to the MacBook. The same drive in other USB interface case delivered 22-27MB / s, same reference.
;
I would give this product 4. 5 stars if the product delivered 35MB / s.
a comparison Passport 120GB drive delivered only 8MB / s, while the average laptop hard drive is that the whole delivered 25MB / s.
I routinely copy a lot of information from the laptop and hard drive every day, and have a little better data transfer rate can save minutes every time I use it and the difference for me this is one reason for an extra few dollars to spend on a faster chip-to-use interface. I really hope that the manufacturers print the actual data transfer rate than 480Mbit / s nonsense USB-2. 0 interface, which nobody expected.

My experience is much the title of this report describes. The device is used sparingly as a back-up your personal files and family photos, only to die a horrible clicking noise. Unfortunately, this is not my first experience of the last few months effort WD drive as the 320’s internal drive is not, and I have a 250GB passport, which turns off without reason, and not restart without removing it and again in.

Since I had just hours and hours on the 300GB of data transfer to a new disk used, it just stopped working and stopped recognized by both my MacBook, which is relatively new, and the computer. Ok, this substance should from time to time, but Western Digital is by far the worst customer service I have ever experienced, because the owner of the tons of electronics. After the phone bothers me about one hours and ask stupid questions, and (plug it in and try, and this, etc. ..), but finally accepted the obvious, that the product is defective, and ordered him to send them to me at my own cost to return to the reformed one. Finally I came to pay more than the cost of the new station and renovated one ended. It works well, but I go to the reliability of each time you use it and ended the question of keeping the old (not portable) hard drive backup of my backup. Rock on, WD!
